Chapter 15

Darsh accompanied us home. I changed into a black sweater and T-shirt, dark jeans, and flat shoes, and tucked my hair under a black baseball cap. After transferring the silver lighter to my back pocket, I bade my friends goodbye and good luck in England.

My taxi pulled away from the condo tower and onto a busy downtown thoroughfare.

Out of curiosity, I pulled out my cell and punched Ezra’s name into the Maccabee employee database, but nothing came up. I tapped my finger against the screen. Was he in there under a code name or did I not have the security clearance to even get a search result?

It made sense that the Maccabees had buried his profile since he was a public figure who was intel gathering. Prime Playboy and Crimson Prince went together. Throwing Maccabee spy into the mix did not. I imagined those hands, which had so tenderly caressed me, choking the life out of someone or snapping their neck, and shivered.

The driver turned up the new song playing, and I scowled. I would have preferred a different anthem for my first visit to the black market than this Nickelback tune. Suzi Quatro’s “The Wild One” or The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb” would have set the vibe. (Yeah, I appropriated the name for the Baroness. Yeah, I thought it would bring mom and me closer together. I was wrong. Maybe I should have paid attention to the lyrics when I named Cherry as a kid. Moving on.)

At least this post-grunge rock chorus I was subjected to right now didn’t include the lyrics “You’re gonna die, you’re gonna die, bwahahaha, you’re gonna die,” so while the song sucked, it wasn’t prophetic.

Putting my phone away, I stared out the window at people going into bars, shoppers on bustling retail streets, and patrons in restaurants enjoying dinner and conversation. Normal everyday life was so far removed from mine at the moment that it was like watching a documentary on aliens.

Fully absorbing where I was going and who I might run into was kind of insane. I warned Cherry that she was not to fight me for control. If worst came to worst, I’d give her the lead, but I called the shots.

I’d never made it far enough across the Brink to reach Babel. Would I see much of the sprawling vamp megacity before reaching the Crypt?

Would I face the infamous Kosher Nostra?

Would Ezra behave like a Maccabee or his father’s son?

Did the Maccabees have some unofficial policy to stay out of Natán’s way? They didn’t have jurisdiction in Babel, but if Ezra killed any humans, he’d done so here on earth.

By all accounts, Natán had been an excellent operative back in the day. What did he think about Ezra’s moonlighting gig? Was there a sliver of allegiance left to the organization he’d given so many years to?

After Natán killed a vamp in self-defense on a job, her undead lover came after him, bent on vengeance. She could have murdered Natán as an
